About The MPS Emerald Society
The MPS Emerald Society was formed in November 2005 by a handful of staff interested in promoting the Irish within the Metropolitan Police Service. Having been approved by the former Commissioner of Police Sir John Stevens work began on setting up the Society.
Potential members were canvassed by a message posted on the forces intranet system and an inaugural meeting was held shortly thereafter. The launching ceremony held at the Met's headquarters at New Scotland Yard was attended by the then Commissioner Sir Ian Blair along with the Irish Ambassador to the UK Daithi O'Ceallaigh.
The Society's motto is "together as one" and the emblem designed features and Irish and British State Flags with a harp and crown representing symbols of both the UK and Ireland. These are emblazoned against the background of a brunswick star which forms the basis for most of the Police badges within the UK.
According to the census records of 2001 approximately 21% of London's population claim to be Irish. It is estimated that some 5,000 employees of the Metropolitan Police Service are of Irish descent. With over 400 members to date joining the Emerald Society, the MPSES is one of the largest staff associations within the Metropolitan Police Service. Membership is growing weekly as the activities and events organised by the Society become more popular.
